The 2nd Half Mark Chamberlin, Fantasy Baseball Staff Writer Jul 11, 2012
The baseball season is a grind, not just for the players but for fantasy owners too. After a 5 day mental break we're back and ready to guide you to a title!
With the trade deadline a little over than a month away there is going to be some moving and shaking and the majority of it that can be found on waivers is in the 9th inning.
Did you miss the early waiver wire frenzy for hot free agent bats? Are you in a daily transaction league? Do you have an extra spot on your bench? C’mon, you know you do! I've got your solution inside.
Again,
we’re talking about prospects that may be a little bit off the radar, and some
that may already be ones you’re watching. One prospect per team for now, and
today we’re taking on the New York Yankees through the San Diego Padres.
It may be too late to draft either of these guys, but
the buy low window is still open. Both of these undervalued hurlers will be
keys to many teams’ titles this season.
Today,
Part 2 of my prospect chat. Remember, I’m not here to talk about the elite
level prospects unless I truly don’t see any other impact players on the
horizon. I want to increase your awareness of some prospects that deserve
recognition, but may not get it from other outlets. We’re here to keep you
informed.
This is where all that planning in the first 10 rounds pays off. You’ve
set yourself up to dominate the latter portions of the draft, just
follow the rules inside and you’ll set yourself up for a title run.
If you’ve
been paying attention at all to prospects, you know the basics.
You know that Bryce Harper is a special
talent.
Mike Trout is going to be a star
for many, many years. Matt Moore is the next coming of Sandy Koufax.
Jesus Montero is the best hitting ‘catcher’
to come along in years.
Sound
familiar?
Throughout your research in
trying to find the next big star, you’ve likely come across something that
resembled the above.
I’m not here to
tell you about these players.
Sure, I
think they are special talents who are all going to have very successful MLB
careers (Moore, in particular I’ve been following for years).
I want YOU to be the guy who is on top of the
upcoming prospects before they get known to the mass-market media.
Throughout the year, this column will be
dedicated to clueing you in on what is going down on the farm.
Come back weekly, and maybe you’ll hit gold
in your prospect hunt!
The first round of players off the draft board several years ago looked very different than this season. Several big names suffered down seasons last year or even for a couple years. However, these players also have proven track records of success and will provide huge value if they bounce back.
Take a dive with me as we review several players that may rebound in 2012, or may continue to regress.
The Boys of Spring Keith Jordan, Fantasy Baseball Staff Writer Mar 26, 2012
It was 81° today where I live.
A few short minutes outside and you could easily be fooled in to believing that we were already steeped in the early dog days of summer.
The reality is that we are barely a week in to spring.
If you aren’t careful you could fall victim to the spring outings of players in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues.
Here is rundown of players who I am often asked about and what their spring performances mean for the coming season.
You have a great start to your squad, but are now
entering the make-or-break portion of the draft. A couple of misguided
picks in this section and it can send your whole draft into a tailspin. The
key words to remember at this juncture are balance and patience. Curveballs
will be thrown your way, but just like on the diamond if you’re ready for them
you will connect.
Fantasy owners look at him from a glass half empty
perspective and say "Hill's peaked already and he'll never hit anything close to 36 HR's
again like he did in 2009". We
couldn't agree more except that fantasy owners are downgrading him far too much
in their evaluation.
Unless
you’re in a deep league, Melky Cabrera probably isn’t on your radar screen as
he projects as a third or fourth outfielder. While it seems like he’s been
around forever, he’s actually just 27 and is coming off a career year with the Kansas
City Royals, posting a .305 average, 18 home runs, 102 runs scored, 87 runs
batted in, 27 stolen based. Step back … those are some impressive numbers!
We have looked at the position players that you want to grab and the ones you want to avoid in your upcoming fantasy baseball draft, but that is only half the battle. Here is a look at some pitchers you should be willing to reach for and others that you should let other owners overpay for.
Adrian Beltre used to be an easy project to examine. Is he in a contract year? Yes? Buy, buy, buy! He’s not? OK, you can have him. However, after two consecutive years of solid production, the tides have turned on how people feel about Beltre. We’re here to remind you not to forget the past.
Why on Earth do we have this guy so low? He hit .320 with 30 home runs and 75 runs batted in last year and is slated for more designated hitter at-bats this year than at-bats as a catcher … we must be nuts! We say, if you think Dan Uggla is a bargain in Round 5, then Mike Napoli is your guy at catcher because he’s going off the board late in Round 4.
In Part 2 of this series, we’re going to continue to
build the foundation of your team. You’ve got a great start with a corner
infielder in Round 1, but the next 2-3 rounds are equally as important in
laying the ground work for your championship-caliber team. Since I didn’t
disclose in Part 1, this series is written from the perspective of a daily
transaction 12-team mixed league with 14 bats and nine arms in the starting
lineup with five bench spots.
Winning
fantasy baseball teams are built by cleverly drafting players on the cusp of a
breakout season while managing to not overpay for players who will not deliver
a repeat of a career season. Here is a look at position players who might be
primed for a breakout campaign and others that I suggest you draft cautiously.
As we flip the calendar to March, baseball teams are reporting to spring training. That can only mean that fantasy baseball drafts are just around the corner. If you are a fantasy baseball traditionalist like me and enjoy playing in rotisserie scoring leagues, you have to keep reading to find out about a winning strategy that will help you draft a well-balanced, winning team.
Matt Kemp and Troy Tulowitzki are very attractive and tempting names at the top of the draft. Kemp bordered on a 40/40 season on a putrid Dodgers team and Tulowitzki will probably be the #1 rated shortstop for the next half decade. However, they are not the keys to success for this season.

Once Albert Pujols was off the market and headed to the
Los Angeles, all eyes focused on free agent Prince Fielder. With signs pointed
to the Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers, the Detroit Tigers swooped in to
sign the highly regarded slugger.
With Fielder and Miguel Cabrera now hitting back to back, what fantasy
implications will result from this acquisition? How will Detroit fare in 2012? Take
a dive with me as we answer these questions.
We like Ian Kennedy (not personally because we’ve never met him), but drafting him late last season, Kennedy put up Cy Young type numbers, winning 21 games, with nearly 200 strikeouts, a sub 3.00 earned run average and a sporty 1.09 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP). So what to expect for 2012?

This is the intro, syllabus day, and just like your professors have tried to drill into your head in years past (or in some of your case’s, many years past), I am going to tell you how important this is and just hope you retain some of it.
"How much do I love thee … let me count the ways.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning wasn't talking about Dan Uggla, but could have been when it comes to a lot of his fantasy owners and the stats he put up in the second half of 2011.
This is the second in a two part series, Scott Martin, Steve Banas, and myself are providing our customized rankings. Today we'll feature the outfield and pitching. Just print it off and dominate your league!

Don't have time to do you own cheat sheet? We've got you covered! This is the first in a two part series, Scott Martin, Steve Banas, and myself are providing our customized rankings. Today we'll start at catcher and go all the way around the diamond to third. Later this week be looking for the outfield and pitching.
Most will remember 2010 as the year of the pitcher, but one thing that’s getting lost is how much more teams are emphasizing the base paths - stealing them, turning a single into a double, going first to third on a single, getting home from first on a double, the list goes on. All of this is why you do not need to worry about speed until late in the draft, no matter how long you wait there will still be stolen bases to acquire.
Want the perfect pitching staff? Here you go …The perfect pitching staff – Zach Greinke, Max Scherzer, Shaun Marcum, Gio Gonzalez, Jair Jurrjens, Jordan Zimmerman, Jonathan Broxton, JJ Putz, Chris Perez, Jason Motte, Daniel Bard, Luke Gregerson. Want to know how to build this staff, or at least something close to it? Come inside.
