After strategizing daily and performing tedious team management, our lengthy fantasy baseball seasons are now over in just a few weeks. Nearly every team in your league including yours likely added a few hot free agents, lost their studs due to injury at one point or another, and are now biting their nails trying to gain an last minute edge. Whether you are in a playoff battle in a head to head league or desperately attempting to climb a spot or two in a rotisserie league, there is still time to make a few positive strides. The Sharks team in the Fantasy Sports Trade Association Experts League has been hovering around fifth through eighth place this week. Pitching has continued to serve as our most significant weakness. On a positive note, fourth place is a mere six points ahead of our current position. Take a dive with me as we review several key players that may make a difference on your roster, whether that is positive or negative. Nelson Cruz- Several weeks ago, it seems as if Nellie had turned the corner. Optimistic owners hoped for a career season out of Cruz assuming he could stay healthy. Well, Cruz has been healthy, but is not having a season to remember. Not only are nearly all of his offensive numbers down this season, but the Rangers outfielder is no longer the double digit stolen base threat from a couple seasons ago. Keep him starting given the potency of Texas’ batting order, but do not expect any rebound in the last few weeks of the season. Derek Jeter- Many critics believed the Yankee captain was fit for a retirement home. Instead, Jeter has proven to be a consistent offensive force all season especially with the Yankees suffering injuries to Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez this season. Over the last week, Jeter hit .451 with a homerun and stolen base. Jeter will likely finish with an average above .320 with over 100 runs scored, and both double digit homeruns and stolen bases. Not too shabby! Jeremy Guthrie- I wrote about this Royals’ pitcher a couple weeks ago. Guthrie continues to be one of the most consistent pitchers over the last month and a half, except for a terrible outing at the end of August against Boston. Start him with confidence this week against the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians. Good luck this week! |
