Diary of an Expert League: Petty Theft

| More

Are you ready for the second half? Let’s cross our fingers that the Fantasy Sharks team can continue to inch up the rankings. This last week included the All-Star break, but I could not be more satisfied where the team sits today. In fact, we peaked at third place and now sit in fourth. We did suffer very unfortunate news regarding Jose Bautista, who has severely hurt this wrist. The Toronto slugger will undergo an MRI so we will hope for optimistic results as Bautista has been swatting lately!

Although the team still has major weaknesses in pitching, we have attempted to fill one of our stolen base gaps without overspending the budget. It may be “petty theft,” but we have already seen positive results in the stolen base category since adding these two players to the team.

Let’s take a dive as we review our last week with the team.

Justin Ruggiano - With Giancarlo Stanton undergoing surgery and being sidelined for the Miami Marlins, Ruggiano is due for a significant playtime increase. His power and speed combination makes him a viable threat as long as he receives enough time on the field. In 2012, he has six home runs and six stolen bases in only 91 at-bats. In fact, he swiped three bases in one game last week. The potential is there, but will the playing time continue?

Cameron Maybin - It is difficult to choose a San Diego Padre for any offensive category. Maybin has been highly touted for a few years now, but has never lived up to his lofty expectations. Although I do not expect a jump in 2012, Maybin has improved from his slow start. Although he only stole one last week, he does have 17 on the season. I could use a few of those, so hopefully he will see more opportunities as his on base percentage is gradually rising.

Andrew McCutchen - Would you have predicted a Pittsburgh Pirate to be the hottest hitter in baseball? Me neither! McCutchen has continued to produce as he is batting higher than .500 with three home runs since last Friday!  He is on fire and posting Most Valuable Player numbers. I hope you drafted him in the second or third round because he will be taken in the first round next year.

We are not even going to discuss pitching. It has been rough. With Roy Halladay and Colby Lewis returning from injury, I am slightly more optimistic. Good luck this week!
