Pitching is the missing gap for the Fantasy Sharks baseball team. For every week of improvement, two weeks of inconsistency follow. The week of July 16-23rd was no exception. The bats continue to swing, and the arms continues to get swatted. Although I feel fortunate and blessed to sit in fourth place and even third briefly this week, I am confident that I would be in contention for the top spot if my pitching showed some predictability. Scott Diamond, Francisco Liriano, Jim Johnson, and Roy Halladay each struggled in at least one of their starts for the week. In addition, news just broke that Texas’ Colby Lewis will miss the remainder of the season. When healthy, Lewis has been one of the Rangers’ most consistent pitchers and a solid source of both wins and strikeouts for the Sharks team. He will surely be missed. Take a dive with me as review some of the key highlights and happenings occurring over the last week. Jose Bautista: Joey bats has been on fire after a slow start. His wrist injury appeared to be very serious and season threatening, but should only keep him sidelined for another week or two. Count your blessings and be thankful you will only need to replace him for a couple weeks. Cameron Maybin: The San Diego Padres’ outfielder has been on the rebound over the last two weeks. Over the last week, he hit .500 with four stolen bases. Unfortunately, a nagging wrist injury has kept him from starting the entire week. Monitor this situation to see of Maybin recovers or is forced into a DL stint. Lance Lynn: Lynn has been one of this season’s top pitching sleepers. After three rocky June starts, the Cardinals’ pitcher has returned to form. He has allowed one earned run in 19 innings with an amazing 22 strikeouts. Steve Cishek: I doubt even a member of Mensa can figure out the Miami Marlins’ closer situation. Manager Guillen had removed Heath Bell from the closer role and has used around three or four closers since then. Although it appears to be a committee situation, Cishek has been one of Miami’s most consistent relievers. After receiving the first save opportunity upon Bell’s removal, I picked up Cishek and placed in my starting lineup. He received zero save opportunities while starting, thus causing me to sit him for this week. Of course, he received a save on Monday night’s game. Monitor this situation closely.
